A Guide To Choosing A Career In Civil Construction Design

Civil construction creates infrastructure involving anything to do with water, earth, or transport. It is a branch of Civil Engineering engaged with the maintenance, design, and construction of roads, railways, buildings, water reservoirs, subdivisions, airports, bridges, sewer systems, tunnels, and dams.

Civil construction designers are responsible for drafting designs for roadways, piping systems, utilities, land grading specifications, and other infrastructural systems for commercial and residential building sites. They read maps and topographical surveys to note land grading, nearby structures, and other related factors. They ensure compliance with design and building codes. Also, they review drawings and sketches of the proposed design. Additionally, they interpret drawings and building plans to determine where to place necessary structures. Civil designers also work with building and architectural firms, construction companies, governments, and private businesses.

A qualification in civil construction design provides you with the skills and knowledge to work as a senior civil works designer or para-professional designer supporting professional engineers.
Graduates will be able to perform broad, specialised, complex and technical tasks and include strategic areas and starting activities.

In civil construction design, you will handle the creation of complex projects to ensure the implementation of the client’s site requirements and are required to show the self-directed application of theoretical and technical knowledge. You will also provide solutions to technical problems or management requirements. A career in this field can be both creative and rewarding.

If you’re interested in becoming a civil construction designer, one of the first things to consider is what kind of education you need. Choosing the right major is always an important step when researching how to become a civil construction designer. Graduates will learn to perform tasks that are specialised, complex and technical and include strategic areas and starting activities, in particular:

  • Managing program risk.
  • Advising on the application of safe design principles to control risk.
  • Leading and managing team effectiveness.
  • Managing the civil works design process.
  • Establishing and maintaining a quality system.
  • Interpreting civil engineering drawings and building plans.
  • Preparing designs for land subdivisions, road infrastructure, drainage, sewer and water systems.

To become a civil designer, you are usually required to have completed some formal training, including a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in Civil Engineering or an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology. You will also need to demonstrate proficiency in CAD software. While completing your formal training, seek ‌internship opportunities and develop your practical experience with 12D Model and CAD programs, such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, InRoads, HydroCAD, and StormCAD.

The types of occupations that you can seek in this field include:
